If you're into the great outdoors - as a farmer, rancher or recreationist - Eastern Oregon is one of the greatest places to be. Located in eastern Oregon, Baker City is situated in the valley between the rugged Elkhorn Mountains and the jagged, snowy Wallowa Mountains. Interstate 84 connects Baker City to several major metropolitan areas, including Boise (130 miles east), Portland (300 miles northwest) and Seattle (380 miles northwest).
The region surrounding Baker City and Baker County is an outdoor recreation paradise. The region includes rugged mountain ranges towering over crystal-blue creeks and rivers as well as thick forests hiding high-mountain lakes. The possibilities are virtually endless for fishing, hunting, rafting, biking, skiing and other outdoor pursuits.
Hells Canyon - gateway to outdoor adventure
Baker County is at the intersection of five scenic byways and home to Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in North America. Jet boat tours and raft trips canyon reveal ancient Indian petroglyphs and historic sites. Anthony Lakes provides outdoor recreation in an alpine setting yet is easily reached by paved highway. Summer hiking and camping are popular in the whole area. In winter, Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort offers downhill and Nordic skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and other winter sports. National Geographic Traveler featured the the Anthony Lakes Nordic Center for its amenities in November 2010.
Both the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area of the Wallowa mountains and the Sumpter area have more snowmobiling trails than anywhere else in the nation. We're confident in saying we have the best snowmobiling in the lower 48 states. Whether for visitors or residents, Baker City offers a incredible quality of life and a authentic rural living experience.
